Bringing Terry Fox Home: Helping Unveil ‘Gateway of Giants’

This past weekend, the team at Phoenix Truck & Crane had the privilege of being part of something truly special. The unveiling of the Gateway of Giants sculptures, honouring the legacy Terry Fox in his hometown of Port Coquitlam.

Phoenix was honoured to be asked by the City of Port Coquitlam to help execute the installation at this local, historic event, as Terry Fox’s story is so close to the hearts of our community. The owner of Phoenix remembers watching Terry run on the streets of Port Coquitlam in the late seventies. To now be entrusted with bringing this part of his legacy home, is something none of us at Phoenix will ever forget.

The sculptures were crafted in Spain, and made their journey to Port Coquitlam, where the Phoenix team got to work. When they arrived, our job supervisor and crane operator collaborated with the installation team. With their efficient teamwork and thorough planning, they ensured that everything would run smoothly at the public unveiling.

Every lift, every adjustment, every move mattered. These aren’t just bronze figures, they are pieces of history, carrying Terry’s spirit and story. Standing alongside City of Port Coquitlam crews and project partners, we felt the weight of the responsibility and stepped up to the challenge.

The pieces were unveiled on Saturday in front of the Terry Fox library. The precision, care, and teamwork shown by our crew and crane operator were noticed by all. Smooth, steady, and professional from start to finish, the installation was executed in a way that reflected just how seriously we took this task. Hearing comments from locals about the pride they felt in seeing a local company handle the work with such respect and skill, made the moment even more special.

We want to extend our gratitude to the City of Port Coquitlam, the Fox family, artist Casto Solano, and everyone that worked tirelessly to bring this project to life. We saw firsthand how complex the process was, but we also witnessed the dedication and heart that carried it through.

For now, and generations to come, the legacy of Terry Fox has a permanent place in his hometown. For us at Phoenix Truck & Crane, we were honoured to help carry home a legacy that means so much to people around the world.
