Annual Tradition: Setting the Stage for Winter Magic at Westin Bayshore’s Winterlust Domes

Each October, we gear up for one of our favourite annual jobs, installing the iconic Winterlust domes at the Westin Bayshore in Coal Harbour, Vancouver. These beautiful eight by eight-foot domes, with their panoramic glass panels, provide breathtaking views of the waterfront while guests enjoy a cozy, unforgettable dining experience. Picture this, you’re surrounded by the serene beauty of Coal Harbour’s waterfront while indulging in the exquisite cuisine of H Tasting Lounge, a true visual and culinary treat!

Winterlust at H Tasting Lounge has become the ultimate winter dining experience in Vancouver, and being a part of its setup, each year is a real pleasure. The moment we move the domes into place, we know that soon, many diners will be enjoying memorable evenings under the stars, warmed by the glow from the city’s lights and the comfort of the glass domes. Each year this job feels like the perfect kick-off to the fall and winter seasons, with the holiday traditions just around the corner.

One of our long time operators Chris, who runs crane unit #229, has been doing this job for seven years, and every year it’s a special occasion. We’ve also had the privilege of partnering with Riggit for the last few years. Riggit, a company known for designing and building innovative rigging systems, has truly elevated this annual project. The domes, while stunning, are made of wood and stay outside all year-round. After a few years of hoisting them solo, we realized that without proper rigging, their longevity was at risk. That’s when Riggit came on board, and it’s been smooth sailing ever since. Their expertise ensures the domes are handled with care and precision, making the process not just efficient but safer for everyone involved.

Installation day is always a big one for our team. While it might look like a small operation, hoisting and placing the six domes, three are placed under to fit under a canopy, which takes time and teamwork. Often, it’s an all-day job, with everyone focused on getting every detail just right. This project has become part of our own yearly tradition, so we love it.

For those looking to experience Winterlust, we can’t recommend it enough. Each dome accommodates up to six guests, and with reservations opening on November 1st, it’s the perfect setting for a family gathering, a unique date night, or even a client meeting. With the holiday season approaching, it could also be a fantastic gift or a great way to bond with your team.

As we wrap up another dome installation, we’re reminded of why we love this job so much. The domes bring joy and enchantment to so many people, and knowing we play a role in creating that experience feels incredibly rewarding. If you’re planning to dine at Winterlust this season, take a moment to appreciate the care and effort that goes into setting up this winter retreat, it’s a labour of love, and we can’t wait to do it all over again next year.
