Port Coquitlam, BC – Sept 2026: September 24, 2026, was a very special night for Phoenix Truck & Crane, and one that brought us something unexpected.
Last Thursday evening, we arrived at the City of Port Coquitlam’s 2026 Best Biz Awards to celebrate with our fellow nominees in the category of ‘Best Local Service Community Choice’. We were honoured to have been nominated and grateful that someone in our community had taken the time to put Phoenix forward for this award.
As the evening progressed, we learned that Phoenix Truck & Crane had also been selected as a finalist in the ‘Business of the Year’ category. When Councillor Steve Darling took the stage to announce the first award of the evening, he started describing our business as the recipient of this award. We were of course thrilled with this honour, and a bit shocked. Phoenix had been selected by the awards selection committee as ‘Business of the Year’!
Phoenix is proud to operate out of our Port Coquitlam offices, and all our staff, drivers and ownership are incredibly honoured, and quite honestly, still pinching ourselves with this award.
What made the moment even more special was having Bill Dick, the owner and founder of Phoenix Truck & Crane at the event, to accept the recognition. Bill isn’t exactly known for seeking out the spotlight, and speeches aren’t his favourite thing. On this night, he stood on the stage, accepted the award on behalf of Phoenix and even shared a few words with the room. While receiving the award was an incredible moment, what happened through the rest of the evening made it even more memorable.
Like most awards’ night, each category was announced by a different presenter and for these municipal awards, the City of Port Coquitlam councillors were called to the task. We don’t know if this was orchestrated by the event planner, premediated by council or even planned at all, but before announcing the winner, they each shared a personal story about their own experiences with Bill. One story was even from 20 years ago, when councillor Glenn Pollock, who wasn’t a councillor back then and didn’t even know Bill at the time, picked up the phone hoping for help with a project. Bill took his call, and of course helped him out, leaving a lasting impression. We had previously heard many of those stories, but it was truly special hearing them recounted by the community.
Those of us that know Bill are very aware that giving back to the community isn’t something he does for recognition, it is simply a part of who he is and how he leads his company. We have witnessed firsthand him help people, support organizations, open doors, offer advice and step up when someone needed a hand, and all without expecting anything in return. We are thrilled that the audience at the ceremony had the chance to hear from these community leaders, telling their own stories about his kindness, generosity, respect, genuine curiosity about people and, above all, a willingness to help.
It was heartwarming to realize that we aren’t the only ones who see how wonderful our leader is.
Phoenix Truck & Crane was founded in 1991, and while the company has grown tremendously over the years, there is still something very personal about the way we do business. Bill genuinely cares. He cares about our drivers our customers and his employees. He cares about the people and organizations in the communities where we work. And that’s why so many people have stayed loyal to Phoenix for all these years.
The Best Biz Awards were a wonderful celebration of Port Coquitlam’s business community, and we were honoured to share the evening with so many other deserving winners and nominees.
Thank you to the City of Port Coquitlam and the Best Biz Awards Selection Committee for this incredible honour. To our Phoenix team, our customers, partners, friends and community; thank you for being part of our story, we couldn’t have reached this milestone without you.
