There is something special about the days when our work goes beyond building for growth and contributing to the local economy. Days where our work become part of something expressive, lasting, and deeply human.
Our team had the privilege of participating in the installation of a new public art piece at a Polygon Homes development, located at Lonsdale Ave & East 17th Street in North Vancouver. With no one moved in yet, the space is still finding its identity, and this piece is set to become part of its heartbeat.
The artwork was created by Robert Cram, originally from Ontario and now based in BC. The concept for this piece draws inspiration from the Lion’s Mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus), a striking, white, cascading form known not only for its unique appearance but also for its long-standing culinary, medicinal uses and deep ecological meaning.
Like any delicate, technical, and highly precise installation, we dedicated a full day to the project. Whether we are on site for one hour or ten, we plan for the process, not just the lift. Public art installations require flexibility, patience, and a deep respect for the creative vision, and that’s something we pride ourselves in understanding.
Matt, our crane operator delivered a flawless performance and stayed as long as needed. We were once again very lucky to be working with Amos, an industry professional alongside Robert, the artist himself. Robert was hands-on; drilling, picking up supplies for last-minute pieces, doing whatever it took to bring his vision to life.
Our part of the job felt like the easiest even though it involved securing a city permit, coordinating traffic control, picking up the piece, setting up on a busy corner, and managing curious onlookers throughout the day. And yes, the interest was immediate. People stopped, looked, asked questions, took photos, and interacted.
The piece wasn’t even fully installed yet, and the magic of public art could already be felt, and trust us when we say, it felt good. The day sparked curiosity, created moments, and brought people together in a way that felt effortless and real.
At Phoenix Truck & Crane, we are proud to help shape the spaces people live in. Projects like this remind us that we are also helping shape how people feel in those spaces.
