Sanctuaries of Belonging: A Monumental Public Art Piece in Surrey

Earlier this month, our team at Phoenix Truck & Crane had the privilege of helping bring artist Alex Proba’s newest large-scale installation, Sanctuaries of Belonging, to life at 10420 City Parkway in Surrey.

Commissioned by Bosa Properties and years in the making, this striking work marks Proba’s biggest project to date, with one of the sculptures reaching nearly twenty feet tall. Each component was hand-built and artistically detailed by the talented fabricators at Alt BLD, whose craftsmanship shines through in every curve and colour.

Our unit #1180 was the perfect crane for the job and rolled onsite bright and early. Arriving ahead of the crane and installation crew, was the flagging crew. They were onsite before everyone else, set-up and secured the working area, and then assisted the crane as it drove into position.

The two 600-pound sculptures were hoisted and placed 90 feet from the curb, followed by a larger piece that required partial assembly onsite. The heaviest component, weighing 2,500 pounds, was lifted and set 40 feet from the curb.

By the end of the day, the vibrant shapes of Sanctuaries of Belonging stood proudly against Surrey’s urban skyline, a visual celebration of colour, form, and community.

If you haven’t had the chance to see it yet, head down to City Parkway and experience it for yourself.
