Scope

The Safety Officer is responsible for working with management, employees, and owner operators to ensure a safe and healthy working environment. The Safety Officer will ensure that the company safety program is compliant with all applicable provincial laws and best practices and implemented in an organized and efficient manner. This person is responsible for managing the Certificate of Recognition (COR) program, conducting onsite vehicle inspections, addressing incidents of injury and damage, and conducting
hire-on and training of new drivers. This person thrives in a fast-paced environment and is able to multi-task and pivot when needed, as they are the go-to person for several departments, assisting in obtaining a variety of safety related documentation. The role will report to the General Manager and the Safety Manager and offers a variety of both in-office and in-field work, requiring someone who can work independently as well as part of the team.

Job Description Details

• Manage Certificate of Recognition (COR) program

• Perform routine inspections of truck, to ensure vehicles are in good working order, including but not limited to tires, lighting and deck condition

• Perform crane inspections to ensure safe set-ups/lifts, including but not limited to vehicle positioning, outrigger deployment and rigging selection

• Inspect equipment carried on trucks and cranes to ensure it is in good condition

• Perform routine inspections of drivers and crane operators to ensure all Phoenix and industry standards are being met

• Address incidents as they arise, such as; minor injuries, major injuries, damage claims, vehicle accidents and near misses

• Conduct hire-on orientation; work with Driver Services and Dispatch to coordinate hiring of new drivers and crane operators

• Assist Crane Sales Staff with lift planning and provide onsite supervision when needed

• Coordinate and participate in the Joint Health & Safety Council (JHSC)

• Work with Driver Services to ensure that all employees and owner operators are up to date with all related training and certification

• Conduct onsite Health & Safety orientation for new workers, both in house staff and owner operators

• Ensure the company is current on all Health & Safety legislation and is meeting with provincial regulations relating to Occupational Health & Safety

• Assist with WCB investigations and claims, including Form 7 & Accident Investigation reports

• Conduct ongoing site safety inspections of the office, warehouse, and yard

• Attend various meetings as a company safety representative

Knowledge and Skills Required

• 1 year minimum in a safety related position

• Must have a current OFA 2

• Thorough knowledge of all WorkSafe (WCB) procedures/safety practices

• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team

• Ability to remain calm and respond effectively while administering first aid

• Ability to organize and ensure all accidents, incidents and injuries are properly reported and recorded as per WorkSafe and Company practices

• Ability to work both independently and in a team

• Well-developed communication skills, both verbal and written

• Fluent in Punjabi an asset

• Trucking industry knowledge/experience an asset

• Understanding of the Certificate of Recognition (COR) an asset

Additional Information

• The successful candidate must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and vehicle

• The successful candidate will ensure our COR Certification standards are always met
